Free Fishing Day - June 2008

Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge along with the Friends of Trinity River Refuge hosted a “Free Family Fishing Day” on June 7th at the Champion Lake Public Use Area. Eight volunteers from the Friends of Trinity River Refuge assisted the kids in casting and baiting hooks.

Butterfly Garden Spring Spruce-up - April 5, 2008

A small group of Volunteers gathered at the Champion Lake Butterfly Garden on Saturday morning to pull weeds and plant new native plants for the expected influx of butterflies and hummingbirds. Good progress was made on the garden in the cool of the morning.

Liberty Jubilee - March 29, 2008

The Friends of Trinity River Refuge volunteers manned the booth Saturday at the annual Liberty Jubilee. Over 600 visitors came by the booth to learn about the refuge and see our pair of live ribbon snakes.

Tree Planting Ceremony - January 29, 2008
Representatives from Dell and Travelocity joined The Conservation Fund, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Environmental Synergy, Inc. today to announce the restoration of 158 acres of forestland that will address climate change, restore sensitive wildlife habitat and enhance public recreation areas at Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge in Liberty County.

Free Family Fishing Day - June 3, 2006
Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge along with the Friends of Trinity River Refuge hosted the annual "Free Family Fishing Day" on June 3rd, 2006 from 9:00am - 11:00am at the Champion Lake Public Use Area. It was the one day in the state of Texas that anyone can fish or crab without a license. We had fishing poles and bait for those who needed it along with experienced fishermen who helped with technique.

Earth Day Celebration - April 22, 2006
Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge and the Friends of the Trinity River Refuge hosted the annual Earth Day Celebration at the Champion Lake Public Use Area. Approximately 200 people participated in the various outdoor activities, including canoeing, kayaking and boating tours. Friends membership assisted in bird walks, butterfly viewing in the hummingbird/butterfly garden and dip netting for aquatic creatures in the lake.

Rededication Ceremony of the Champion Lake Public Use Area
In commemoration of Earth Day 2005, Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge and the Friends of Trinity River Refuge rededicated the Champion Lake Public Use Area. Activities included canoeing, kayaking and boating tours, bird and butterfly viewing, walking the levee trail, and dip netting in the lake for the kids. Over the past 6 months, Refuge staff, Friends of Trinity River Refuge and volunteers completed a new levee, butterfly/hummingbird garden with trail, and new parking area to enhance public use opportunities along the 800 acre lake.

Butterfly Garden at Champion Lake - November 4, 2003
The Friends of Trinity River Refuge and the Liberty Master Gardeners designed, landscaped and planted a 70 by 100 foot butterfly and hummingbird garden near the parking lot of the Champion Lake fishing pier on the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge. On November 4, 2003 during a volunteer workday, about 200 native Texas plants, including trees and flowers, were planted for the benefit of the butterflies and birds. There is a path through the garden that is handicapped accessible. Plans are in the works to label the plants for educational purposes, and to add more plants in the Spring of 2004.

Earth Day 2003

Earth Day Clean-up - 2003
In honor of Earth Day, Friends of Trinity River Refuge sponsored a clean-up of the dump area located at the northern end of Ohio Street in Liberty. This area, which has been used for illegal dumping for years, is now part of the refuge. The volunteers helping in the clean-up effort were City of Liberty employees, Friends members, and Refuge Staff members. Heavy equipment was used to fill a 40-yard dumpster with the trash picked up.

Centennial Celebration at Champion Lake Pier - March 15, 2003
As part of the national celebration to highlight a "Century of Conservation," Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge and the Friends of Trinity River Refuge dedicated a new fishing/observation pier and boat ramp on Saturday, March 25, 2003. The event took place at the Champion Lake public use area. Nearly 200 people attended the event.

National Friends Conference 2003

National Friends Conference - Washington, DC - 2003
In February, 2003, Friends volunteers Barbara Tilton and Celeste Newton attended the National Centennial Conference in Washington, DC where they had the opportunity to meet with Congressman Jim Turner to discuss Trinity River Refuge issues.
